Our Headmaster Mr Terence Ayres was interviewed live on BBC Radio Essex by presenter Ben Fryer on 2nd February 2026. The conversation focused on the growing number of independent school closures across the country following the government’s introduction of VAT on school fees—a policy that has placed significant financial pressure on families and, most importantly, on pupils.
During the interview, Mr Ayres highlighted the real impact of these changes, noting that many families who have long valued independent education are finding it increasingly difficult to continue. He emphasised that the effect is not merely financial: pupils face upheaval, uncertainty, and the prospect of moving to entirely new educational environments.
Mr Ayres also took the opportunity to speak about the essential role independent schools—such as Saint Nicholas School—play in their wider communities. He described how schools like ours contribute through outreach programmes, partnerships with local groups, and active involvement in charity and volunteer initiatives.
In addition, he underscored that independent schools are not only educational institutions but also key contributors to the local economy, supporting employment, using local suppliers, and generating business for surrounding areas.
